North Of the Wall

We saw out the end of October with a trip up to Northumberland, just past Hadrian’s Wall, and then onwards up to Loch Awe in Scotland, accompanied by friends and the worlds cutest little black pug.

The idea behind the trip to Northumberland was to take advantage of the incredible dark sky park they have around the Kielder area for some stargazing and astrophotography. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas and we only had a single briefly clear night during our 3 day stay. On the plus side, the stormy clouds made for some incredible landscapes during the daylight hours.

We continued northwards up towards Oban and Fort William, where we took a trip on The Jacobite – a fully working steam train that many will recognise as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. Scotland was rainy, windy and unbelievably beautiful. It was a long 6 hour journey home but it was worth every second.

You can see a selection of my favourite images from the trip in the gallery below.

Lindisfarne & The Angel of The North

I got to spend an a lovely night and day bobbing around the Northumberland coast and the island of Lindisfarne (a.k.a. Holy Island) recently. Lindisfarne is a tidal island which gets cut off from the mainland twice a day when the North Sea rises over it’s connecting causeway (if you’re planning a visit be sure to check the tide timetable before setting off to avoid ending up like this).  Happily marooned there for half a day I took the opportunity to take some photos around the island, including some long exposures of the rising tide.

I wanted to capture some of the tranquility of this beautiful little island and the coastline that surrounds it. I’ve also included a few shots of Anthony Gormley’s  ‘Angel of the North’, which was a quick stop on the way home.
